How to Watch a DVR from Another TV

by Alice Godfrey, Demand Media

A digital video recorder (DVR) outputs a video signal through a video connection on its back panel. You can add a second television set to watch what is being played on the DVR by using a coaxial cable, which is available at a hardware store or a cable/satellite service supply center. Household tools will be needed, but neither the DVR nor the TV will be modified in any way in order them to connect to each other.

Step 1

Turn the DVR off, if it is on, using the remote. Rotate the DVR so that you can access the back panel, taking care not to pull out any of the cables connected to it when it is being moved.

Step 2

Screw the end of a coaxial cable into the coaxial output on the back of the DVR. Rotate the DVR back to its original position.

Step 3

Run the coaxial cable along the baseboard of the wall until you reach the television set that you will use to watch the DVR's recorded television shows. Staple the coaxial cable to the baseboard using a staple gun to prevent a tripping hazard.

Step 4

Screw the free end of the coaxial able into the "Ant" input on the back of the TV. Typically the "Ant" input is on the back upper edge of the TV, or alongside other connections in a back panel.

Step 5

Press the TV remote power button and press the "Setup" button on the remote. If there is no setup button, you press the "Menu" button instead.

Step 6

Maneuver through the menus using the direction keys or arrows on the remote until you come to the "Video" settings. Select this setting by pressing the "OK" or "Select" button on the remote. Maneuver through the choices presented on the screen, locate and select the "Video input" settings.

Step 7

Maneuver through the inputs displayed on the screen, locate and select the "Ant" input. Exit the menus by pressing either the "Exit" button" or "Menu." Select channel "3" on the TV using the remote. The TV will now display whatever is being played on the DVR.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can tape the coaxial cable to the baseboard if you don't want to use staples.
