Keeping your old cell phone makes switching services much easier.

If you are switching your cell phone service from Verizon Wireless to AT&T;, you can keep your current cell phone number. To move your phone number to AT&T;, take your Verizon billing information, including your account number and mailing address, to an AT&T; retail store or have it on hand as you visit the AT&T; website. If you are considering switching cell phone companies, make sure your contract with your current service has expired; early termination fees can total hundreds of dollars.
Step 1
Decide if you want to activate your AT&T; service in a retail store or online. In either case, do not deactivate your Verizon account until you have successfully transferred your number to your new AT&T; phone.
Step 2
Visit the AT&T; website (www.wireless.att.com) to transfer your number to AT&T.; Enter your current cell phone number and zip code in the appropriate fields, then press the "Check Availability" button. You will be brought to a new screen that will tell you whether you can move your phone number to the new service or not.
Step 3
Follow the on-screen prompts on the screen you come to in Step 2 to purchase your new Verizon phone. Your new phone will ship once the transfer request is completed and your old Verizon number will be on your AT&T; phone once you receive it and activate it.
Step 4
Visit an AT&T; retail store to purchase cell phone service and a new phone. An in-store AT&T; representative can set up your new phone with the old Verizon number. Once you purchase the new phone you will be able to make calls on it, but you will still receive calls on your Verizon phone until the transfer request is completed.
