A remote control uses a beam of invisible light to control devices that have built-in receivers.

Remote controls use infrared light (IR) to send a signal to control a device. You can reduce the effective range of the remote that is used with a Comcast HD cable box by using tape to cut down the strength of the beam. This will keep other devices nearby from being affected by the remote.
Step 1
Spray glass cleaner on a soft cloth. Wipe the front end of the Comcast HD cable box's remote control with the moistened side of the cloth. Let the remote air-dry before continuing.
Step 2
Stand facing the cable box at the point where you don't want the remote to be effective. Place a strip of cellophane tape over the front end of the remote.
Step 3
Aim the front of the remote at the cable box. Press any button. If the cable box responds, place another strip of cellophane tape over the end of the remote. Continue this procedure until the cable box no longer responds to the remote.
