What Modems Work with Qwest Highspeed DSL?

by Susan Reynolds, Demand Media

Qwest provides high-speed Internet and phone services to millions of customers. Since modems can run anywhere between $30 and $100, the company offers its customers the choice of renting a modem for a nominal fee each month. There are over four options you may choose. In some areas, the Qwest office may have only one brand of modem, but they all provide the same basic functionality.

Actiontec PK5000

The Actiontec PK5000 is a wireless combination of modem/router that works with Qwest DSL. Its most prominent feature is that it is very slim and portable. It has two antennas, which boosts the Wi-Fi signal. It also contains 64MB of RAM and 32MB of flash. It can work with Qwest's high-speed Internet up to speeds of 24 Mbps downloading and 1 Mbps uploading. Since it has a built-in router, you do not need to buy a separate device.

ZyXEL PK5000z

This modem is built for high-speed Internet. It has the standard 11g wireless capability with a four-port gateway. The modem also has a security feature that can be enabled by pressing the button on the top of it. You can lay this modem down or stand it up vertically. Qwest offers this modem for sale or for use as a rental. The company offers to install this modem or gives you instructions on how to install it yourself.

Actiontec M1000

The Actiontec M1000 is another commonly-used modem that you can rent from Qwest. It works with Windows Me, 98, 2000, XP, Vista, and Win 7. It includes a USB port and an Ethernet port for more connection choices. The Actiontec can be positioned horizontally or vertically for storage purposes since it has a stand. You can also mount this modem on the wall, but you need to take off the rubber foot pads to do so.

Motorola 3347

Motorola calls this an "extreme router" on their website. The 3347 model is a plug-and-play modem/router that doesn't require any setup CDs. Its security features include VPN, WPA, and WEP for more choices. It works with Qwest's VoIP phone services and Video-on-Demand. It also has the standard four port Ethernet switch and an external antenna. The "3D reach" feature means that it provides wireless service all throughout a house or office.
