How do I Use an Old DSL Modem to Connect to the Internet?

by David Johnston, Demand Media

With the expanding number of Internet service options, used DSL modems are easy to find as customers switch from one service to another. You may even have an old one that you used before moving to a non-DSL location or experimenting with another type of service. No matter how you've come upon an old DSL modem, they're usually interchangeable between companies and chances are good that you'll be able to use it to connect to the Internet.

Step 1

Call the service provider you intend to use to make sure the modem will work with their network protocol, i.e. PPPoA or PPPoE. Most modems support both, but your provider will let you know for certain. You can skip this step if you're already signed up with a provider by simply plugging in your modem and seeing if it works.

Step 2

Connect your modem to a wall phone jack using an RJ11 phone cable. Make sure you have filters on any line leading to a phone, but do not use a filter on the line leading to the modem.

Step 3

Connect the modem to your computer using an Ethernet cable. The Ethernet jack is on the back of your modem. Plug the modem into a power source and turn on your computer.

Step 4

Enter your user name and password or insert the setup CD if you have one for your modem.
