U-verse is a digital television, telephone and high-speed Internet service offered by AT&T; in select areas. U-verse TV delivers up to 410 channels (as of 2011), and one way to maximize those channels is with the use of a DVR (digital video recorder). The DVRs available with U-verse stand out among those of its competitors, both in the storage capacity of the hard drives and the features provided.
Capacity
AT&T; uses DVRs from different manufacturers for U-verse TV subscribers, and the size of the hard drive in the DVRs is dependent on the specific model. The Motorola VIP1216 and Cisco IPN430 DVRs will store up to 133 hours of standard definition (SD) content or 48 hours in high-definition (HD), while the newer VIP1225 and IPN4320 will hold up to 233 hours in SD or 84 in HD. As of 2009, all new subscribers receive the higher-capacity models, with upgrades for existing customers subject to availability and additional fees.
Total Home DVR
In addition to the high storage capacity, U-verse DVRs are designed with a quad tuner, which gives them the ability to record four different channels at once. This feature is especially useful for subscribers who opt for the Total Home DVR option. With this, up to eight TVs can be networked to the primary DVR (with additional receivers connected to each TV), with the full range of DVR functionality on all connected TVs. However, unlike some providers that offer a similar feature, U-verse DVRs do not have an input for connecting an external hard drive to increase the total memory, nor can multiple DVRs be used with Total Home DVR to pool the capacity of all DVRs in use.
Features
The quad tuner of a U-verse DVR enables a feature known as Multiview, which allows you to select four different channels to view on screen simultaneously. Another option is the U-bar, a customized on-screen display of local news, weather, sports and other information at the touch of a button (with active Internet connection). The DVR can be programmed remotely using a computer or other wireless device, and with Total Home DVR, you can even pause and rewind live TV with the non-DVR receivers, as well as record a currently playing program up to 60 minutes prior to pressing "Record."
Monitoring Capacity
When the available memory space of the DVR's hard drive is full, the DVR will erase previously recorded programs to make room for new recordings. If the drive is nearing its limit, you will see the message "Recording space is getting low" when you attempt to set a recording. Also, you can check the remaining memory space by pressing "Menu" on the DVR's remote and scrolling to select "Options." Select "System Options" and then "System Information," then scroll right to "System Resources" to view the free space displayed under "Disc Usage."
