Choosing an Internet service provider is no easy task. You must examine the price, speed, reliability, customer service and availability of the service before making a decision. Evaluate the services of BellSouth and Comcast to determine which Internet provider suits your personal needs the best. If both services seem to satisfy your needs equally, the choice may come down to availability and simple convenience.
Connection
BellSouth DSL service transmits Internet data through phone cables, while Comcast cable Internet serve transmits information through a cable connection. The DSL modem connects directly to a phone jack, so a phone jack near the computer is necessary. A cable outlet is required for the installation of a Comcast modem. If the necessary connection is not available, both companies will send a technician to your home to install the necessary outlet for an additional fee.
Speed
Comcast Internet service provides download speeds up to 20 Mbps with the addition of PowerBoost technology. BellSouth DSL offers four pricing structures, each with a different speed. The maximum download speed is 6 Mbps, which is 125 times faster than most dial-up connections. On the surface, Comcast offers greater speeds than DSL, but neighborhoods share cable Internet connections. This means that when several homes in the same neighborhood are on the Comcast network simultaneously, the connection speed is slower for all of those users. Additionally, the features and specifications of your computer also affect download speeds, so the actual usage speeds of both services are usually lower than the maximum speeds stated.
Security
BellSouth offers AT&T; Internet Security Suite, which McAfee services for customers who subscribe to 3 Mbps or higher speed subscriptions. Lower speed customers must pay an additional fee to obtain the security services. This security program includes anti-virus software, a firewall, a safe search SiteAdvisor that offers web site safety ratings and a selection of PC cleaning tools that deletes temporary computer files. Comcast includes Constant Guard with its Internet service. Constant Guard provides Norton Secutiry Suite anti-virus and firewall protection, Secure Backup and Share to backup a small selection of personal files, and Identity Guard, which protects user IDs and other personal information.
Email and Storage
Comcast includes the SmartZone Communications Center with every Internet subscription. This service includes up to seven email accounts with 10 GB of storage space within each address. You can access these accounts on the web or through third-party email programs such as Outlook or Incredimail. BellSouth offers a maximum of 11 email accounts with 10 GB of storage for each account. Both services offer website hosting for personal use for each user on the account.
