Does Comcast Have HD DVR Receivers?

by Matt Koble, Demand Media

Digital video recorders let you conveniently record TV for later viewing. Comcast, the cable service provider, has two DVR options, one for standard-definition TVs and one for high-definition, or HD. The HD DVR includes all the features of the standard DVR, plus the ability to record HD programming. The HD DVR also has a larger hard drive, allowing it store more hours of programming.

Features

Subscribers of Comcast's digital cable service can upgrade their cable box to a DVR. The box Comcast provides will serve as both your cable box and your DVR -- no need for two boxes. The HD DVR lets you record one show while watching another one, or record two shows simultaneously while watching something you've previously recorded. THE HD DVR comes equipped with Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound compatibility.

Storage

Comcast's HD DVR has a 500 GB hard drive for storing your shows. The regular DVR has only an 80 GB hard drive. While the SD DVR can store about 45 hours of standard-definition programming, the HD DVR can hold up to 300 hours of SD programming. Because HD content takes up more storage space, the HD DVR can hold only about 60 hours of HD programming. You can mix and match the two, storing some SD and some HD content.

Live TV Benefits

Aside from being able to record your favorite TV shows, both Comcast DVRs let you control live TV. You can pause your show when you want to take a break. If you missed something or want to watch it again, you can rewind live TV. The DVR even lets you replay live TV in slow motion, ideal for sports and action.

Series Recording

With either Comcast DVR, you can set it to automatically record your favorite shows all season long. This set-and-forget feature ensures you always have your favorite scheduled shows available, so you don't have to manually record them each time. The HD DVR can be set to automatically skip reruns and prioritize your shows based on your rating. The DVR also automatically re-sets your series recording if the show's airtime changes.
