Verizon's FiOS is a digital television, telephone and high-speed Internet service available in select areas -- parts of 16 states, as of June 2011 -- that uses fiber-optic technology to transmit video, digital voice and fast Internet connections as streams of digital data to and from your location. FiOS offers different plans involving individual services as well as for a combination of the three to match both the specific needs and the budget of the individual customer.
FiOS TV
Verizon offers three different programming packages for FiOS TV, along with a very basic plan that contains only local channels, as of 2011. The first package is the Prime HD plan, which offers over 195 channels (over 50 in HD), including all the major cable-based networks. The second is the Extreme HD package, with a total of over 285 channels, over 70 in HD, adding sports and family tiers to those offered in Prime HD. The third plan is Ultimate HD, offering over 350 channels, over 95 in HD, which includes premium channels and additional movie and sports channels. The exact number of channels and specific channels offered may vary by location.
FiOS DVR
After choosing a programming package, you also must choose the set-top receiver box to deliver that programming. Models to choose from include the standard HD receiver and one that adds digital video recording capability to record and store programs to play back at any time. In addition, you can either have the single DVR or opt for the Multi-Room DVR service -- for a higher monthly fee -- in which additional receivers are added, with additional fees, to any other TVs in the household to allow them the full range of DVR functions as well. Or, substitute another DVR for one of the receivers to create the Multi-Hub DVR service, pooling the overall storage capacity while maintaining a single playlist.
FiOS Internet
While Verizon offers basic high-speed Internet plans independent of FiOS, the highest delivers download speeds of only up to 15Mbps. FiOS Internet offers three different primary plans, with different connection speeds and prices to match. Each plan offers maximum download speeds of 15, 25 and 50Mbps, respectively, and each includes Wi-Fi hot spot access in designated locations and 10MB of personal Web storage space. In addition, for those with a need for even greater speed -- and a higher budget -- FiOS also has an ultimate high-speed plan with a maximum speed of 150Mbps.
Telephone/Bundles
Though Verizon offers a standard, stand-alone home telephone plan that comes with its own set of features -- and the option to bundle with the basic Internet plan and a DirecTV TV package -- FiOS Digital Voice is the sole FiOS phone package offered, which includes over 20 calling features and unlimited domestic calls. To create a price savings for subscribers, FiOS offers different versions of what it calls the Double Play -- Internet plus phone or TV -- and Triple Play -- all three services -- bundles, with ascending prices to include the higher Internet and TV packages. Certain introductory specials may be available as well, based on location and on any current deals offered by Verizon.
