Pros & Cons of Comcast Phone Service

by Jack Powell, Demand Media

In order to be competitive in today's marketplace, telephone, cable and Internet providers need to offer more than one type of service. Comcast, which started out as a cable provider, now offers users cable, high-speed Internet and phone services, making it a versatile company. Comcast's phone service has both pros and cons.

Bundles

Using Comcast for cable, high-speed Internet and voice services allows users to take advantage of the bundles Comcast offers. By bundling two or more services, customers pay less than they would if they purchased each service separately. Bundling services also gives users one bill to pay each month rather than three separate bills that may be due at three separate times.

Added Features

Comcast's phone service provides many of the same features a traditional landline offers, including caller ID, call waiting, three-way calling and voicemail. In addition, Comcast offers some other features that may appeal to customers. Incoming caller information is displayed on phones equipped with caller ID as well as on any television that is turned on. This allows users to see who's calling before they even reach the phone. Comcast's voicemail can be accessed from any smartphone or computer making it easier to check messages when you're not home.

Outages

One of the downsides of bundled services is when one service goes down, they all go down. While Comcast's outages are not excessive, if you do lose your Comcast service, you will also lose your telephone services until Comcast is back online in your area. Since most people have cell phones, being without a telephone for a few hours is not normally a big problem, but for businesses considering Comcast voice, this is something to keep in mind.

Faxing

For any businesses or individuals that still use faxes to communicate, you must consider a few things. While it is possible to send faxes using Comcast, most people experience difficulties when attempting to do so. You may be able to get it to work well enough to send an occasional fax or two, but if you fax multiple documents on a daily basis, you may want to stick to your landline.
