Verizon FiOS Best Way to Connect to an HDTV

by Eoghan McCloskey, Demand Media

FiOS is the name for Verizon Wireless's combined telephone, Internet and television services that operate over a fiber-optic network. If you choose to have FiOS service installed in your home, a Verizon install technician will likely need to install a digital cable converter box in your home. Over the course of using your service, you may at times need to reconnect the box to your TV, like if you move your TV from one part of the room to another.

Connection Options

The first consideration to make before connecting your FiOS box to your TV is what connection options are available for you to use. Verizon FiOS service uses several different types of cable boxes, so inspect the back of your cable box to see what connection ports your box supports. Possible types of connections include composite (red, yellow and white); component (red, green, blue, red and white); S-video, HDMI, coaxial and DVI.

TV Connection Options

Having established what types of connections your box supports, determine the same information in regards to your television. Inspect the audio and video connection ports your TV has available and note which ones the cable box also supports. If there's more than one type of connection that both your cable box and TV support, you have the luxury of choosing what type of connection you would rather use to watch TV.

Comparing Connection Types

Which type of connection is considered best is dependent on several factors. Any connection type that's not supported by your TV isn't an option; nor is any connection port that's already in use by another component device such as a DVD player. If you're a serious TV enthusiast and cost isn't a prohibitive factor, consider that the highest quality audio and video is offered by HDMI cables that support both 1080p picture quality and 5.1 surround sound audio quality. On the other hand, if you don't watch a lot of TV, the added expense of using an HDMI cable may not be justified given the availability of less expensive options such as composite cables and S-video.

Other Considerations

As noted, FiOS offers numerous different makes and models of cable boxes that all vary in terms of, among other features, the types of audio and video connections that they support. Thus you may find yourself in the position of wanting to use the best audio and video connections that your TV supports while your FiOS box doesn't support the same connection. In these cases, you can contact Verizon and have it upgrade your box to one that supports the connection type that you want to use.
