How to Connect My DSL Modem to My Router

by Iam Jaebi, Demand Media

A router is a device that allows you to connect several Internet-capable devices to a single Internet source such as a DSL modem. Wireless routers are ideal because they allow you to connect computers and mobile devices using Ethernet cable and wireless connections. In order to connect your DSL modem to a router, you must use an Ethernet cable, which can be purchased at any office supply or electronics store. Once connected to a power source, the devices begin working together seamlessly.

Step 1

Insert one end of the Ethernet cable into the port labeled "Internet" on the DSL modem.

Step 2

Insert the second end of the Ethernet cable into the port on the rear of the router labeled "Internet" or "Ethernet." When looking at the back of the router, this is the first available port from the left.

Step 3

Plug the router's power adapter into a power outlet or power strip. One to two green lights will show on the front of the router for "Power" and "Internet." A power light is always a steady green, indicating the router is on. An Internet light blinks intermittently when data is transferred from the DSL modem to the router. The router is now ready to connect your computers.
