While a high-speed DSL Internet connection with a DSL modem may suffice for a personal computer, there are advantages of receiving wireless Internet. If you have a laptop or other portable Wi-Fi device, having a wireless signal means you are free to move around your home or office while still maintaining a working Internet connection. Regardless of your Internet provider, you will simply need an Ethernet cable to connect a router with a DSL modem.
Step 1
Power off the wireless router and the DSL modem. Disconnect all the power cords from the electrical outlets or power strips.
Step 2
Attach one end of the Ethernet cable to the Ethernet port on the wireless router. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable to one of the "WAN" ports on the back of your DSL modem.
Step 3
Plug the power cables on the wireless router and DSL modem back into the power source. Flip the power switch to the "ON" position. Wait a few seconds for your router to detect a working Internet signal from your DSL modem. Once you see a flashing green light next to the "wireless" icon on your router, you will have established a connection.
Step 4
Turn on your computer and ensure the wireless function is turned on as well. Search for your wireless device and click on the network name to begin connection. If your wireless router is password protected, you will have to enter the WEP or WPA key that is located on the side or back of your wireless router.
